From Surf 2 Lava (once upon a time)

Sorry about the messed up format of photos vs story below (as in next couple of blogs under this one) but when the internet is as slow as it was in Nicaragua, it makes it a hell of a lot easier, but we should be back on track with the standard issue layout.....

So we found out that when the powere goes off in San Juan del Sur, there is not a hell of a lot to do, no World Cup to watch leaves you with looking at stuff, and there is not much stuff to look at so we spent most of Wednesday wlaking around aimlessly complaining about the heat, hoping that the powere was going to come back on in time to watch Australia take on Croatia the following day. We bumped into some Scottish lassies whom we had met at The Monkey Hut to hang out with, and Neo decided to go check out some lighthouse and before you knew it, the sun was setting and we were up on the girls balcony drinking Rum.

Neo and I were up early to find that the powere had kicked back in, just in time to check out the US game, before waiting nervously in the pub to watch a crucial game for Australiato head into the next round. Lets just say that thanks to he several beers tha helped keep my nerves, Neil & I were pretty trashed by the time Australia had drawn with the Eastern Europeans. Pretty big night to celebrate us making it through with the gang at the local bar.

We all met early (enough) on Friday morning to head out to Majagual, a nearby beach backpacker eco resort on a pretty beach surrounded by cliffs.

There are no TV`s in Majagual hence our time wasting efforts in San Juan to cacth the Aussie game. We managed to score our own little place right on the beach which was perfect for he six of us to hang out and spend some qality time driking rum.

We spent the afternoon lounging around on the beach and that evening rather tranquil apart from a late night swim with some of the most amazing fosfouressence (don`t know if that is spelt right, but I mean those crazy swimming critters that light up when they are disturbed) that I have ever seen.

The next day was even lazier, except when Neo and I realised that we had run out of Rum from the night before. We decided to go for a walk to find some, this eventuated in 2 of the Scottish girls going one way and us another. After 30 minutes down the beach we came across a surfing hangout, which like the last 2 places advised us to head back to where we were staying as that was the only place that sold Rum, probably should of checked there in the first place!

Once we arrived back at the lodge nd realised that the Rum from the lodge hada 300% mark up, we decided to continue our Rum Hunt. By chance Neo`s Auntie who lives in Managua happened to roll up in their pick-up for the day, so we jumped aboard with the 4x4 expert behind the wheel (that`s me) and headed into town to finally put an end to our rum hunt. The afternoon was back on the playa, before free tequila shots
(about 3 per unit)every half hour from 7 through till about 10, more swimming through the glowing water and finally bed sometime about 1.

(OK, so blogger, internet & computer hates me again, so you are going to have to skip to the end of this blog for more visual translations.....)

Time to head back to civilazation (and not just for Rum), to say goodbye to the girls and onto Isla de Ometepe after a crazy taxi ride to the Ferry, which we missed by seconds to wait for the next one, which the taxi driver told us that there wasn`t to get us into his cab, playing cards and drinking a beer. Finally we made it over to the island, only to find that the hostl we wanted to stay in was apparently closed because the owners were on a holiday, where are we going to watch the Australia vs Italy game now?

We found some other suitable accomo, before some more cards by rocking chair, a grand daddy pizza for dinner and a stumble upon a Canadian run Sports Bar called Yogi`s (after the big black lab). We watched a movie on the big screen before promising our return at 10 the next day for Round 2.

After a dissapointing loss to Italy which I don`t wish to talk about, it was time to move on to what we had come here for; Volcano Maderas. We jumped on the next bus around to Merida which took a hell of a lot longer than we expected (4 hours for some 60 something km), before arriving at the Hacienda, the local gringo haunt which to our surprise had a TV which we could of watched the game on after all, at least with the Aussies out our trip will no longer be dictated by Futbool. We signed up for the climb and settled in nicely with a swim in the lake and a massive buffet dinner.

We headed out early the next morning (Neo, Stephen & I + Guide) for the Hobbit climb of a lifetime, over tree branches and roots, & around ferns and bushes, to reach the summit only to head back down to a cool, `magical`, foggy lake to lunch on before making the 4 hour slippery as hell retrn to base camp! Lots of fun and spills where had, more down than up. Washed off in the lake on our return and spent the next 48 hours recuperating in the hammock, before a group of 11 of us headed back into town via express truck on Thursday, to shoot across the water and onto Managua for our last night, in a dodgy area by the bus station, in Nicaragua before heading back to my home away from home.
